Apache and Charmian are two of 16 Cox & Stevens designed Seawanhaka Schooners built side-by-side in 1925 at Bath Iron Works in Maine, for members of the Seawanhaka Corinthian and New York Yacht Clubs. They are 58' on deck, 12' in beam, draw 8' and carry 7.5 long tons of outside lead. Each is 20 net tons with 1,700 sq ft of working sail.

The Rig
The boats were rigged with a Marconi main and either a gaf or Marconi foresail. Two years later the rigs on many of the boats were re-designed by Irving Cox to a main staysail with a bowsprit and a jib stay. This significantly improved their speed as well as their ability to point to weather

At Rutherford’s Boat shop in Richmond, California, sits hull #8 APACHE (Ex Diamond W). She has a hull and deck in poor condition, but most of her original interior partitions are stored away. She has her masts and boom in good condition. Her bowsprit is missing. APACHE’S project has been neglected for many years and she has no prospect in site.

In Ventura, California, sits hull #13 CHARMIAN. She has had 90% of her frames replaced, new bronze floors, new purple heart floors, new fore foot, new sternpost, new horn timber, all new deck framing, and partially decked with what would be the first layer of decking. New bronze bolts for her lead ballast keel. The work is all professionally done. Over $300,000 was put into this restoration. CHARMIAN has almost no hardware, no spars or interior parts. Her restoration came to a halt in 2008.

My proposal is to take Apache, a boat in complete disrepair with little chance of being restored to her original grandeur but with most of her hardware, interior parts and spars intact and combine it with her sister, Charmian, which has a beautifully restored hull and deck and is ready to accept what Apache has to offer. If this is accomplished we will have saved an important part of The Seawanhaka-Corinthian Yacht Club history.

APACHE is owned by Rutherford's Boat Shop and will be given to someone who qualifies to take on this project.
CHARMIAN has storage charges against her of more than $40,000. This should be negotiated down.
